Acupuncture was developed in China over 2,500 years ago to treat illness and prevent disease. Thin, sterile, disposable needles are inserted in precise acupuncture points to promote the movement of the body's natural energy or qi (pronounced CHEE). Needling these points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals that, in turn, stimulate the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals reduce pain and inflammation, and influence your body’s immune system to restore balance.
Every acupuncture session is unique to you as every person reacts to acupuncture in their own way. Some patients respond to acupuncture more quickly than others. Some patients experience a significant reduction in their symptoms after one or two treatments. Acupuncture needles are solid and as thin as a few hairs, unlike hypodermic needle used in a doctor’s office which are large and hollow. Most patients do not feel the needles as they are usually inserted shallowly, less than half an inch.
